And he really did do it his way
Paul Anka celebrates his 55th year in show-business this month with the release of a new album called “Duets” on which he sings with some of the world’s top artists like George Benson, Michael Buble, Dolly Parton, Leon Russell, Gloria Estefan, Willie Nelson, Celine Dion and Tom Jones.
The release coincides with the publication of Paul’s long-awaited life story, “My Way: An Autobiography”’ – the title being drawn from the signature song he wrote for Frank Sinatra. The book is packed with rich tales of showbusiness around the world and the people in his life, from The Rat Pack” of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr, Elizabeth Taylor, Tom Jones, Michael Jackson, Adnan Khashoggi, Little Richard, Brooke Shields and Brigitte Bardot to Barnum & Bailey Circus acrobats.
The “Duets” album brings together a mixture of the best artists and songs throughout music history, including a pairing up with Frank Sinatra on the all-time classic “My Way”, Michael Jackson’s posthumous last single “This Is It” co-written by Paul, and the track he penned for Tom Jones, “She’s A Lady”.
“Throughout the history of music there have been all kinds of songs – to me, the classics still reign supreme,” said Paul. “This endeavour, these songs, will be easy on your ears; they are the stuff that love and life is all about.
‘I am proud of what you are about to hear, and I am grateful to those of you out there who continue to show an interest in every body of work that I create.
“I have always said that success has many fathers and I thank everyone who has made this venture possible. It is always a team effort.”
Paul was just 16 when his self-penned number ‘Diana’ hit No.1 in both the US and Britain in 1957, and the American singer/songwriter/entertainer carried on putting singles into the charts throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
He wrote all his own hits – other major successes being ‘You Are My Destiny’, ‘Lonely Boy’, ‘Put Your Head On My Shoulder’ and ‘Puppy Love’.
Paul, far-sighted in an often financially precarious business, took control of his career by producing, buying and owning his master recordings, a practice he still employs today. He further cemented his career during the pre-Beatles era by moving into posh big city night clubs like New York’s Copacabana that were long the province of Frank Sinatra and his generation.
“Duets” will be released by Sony Music Legacy Recordings on April 9, the same day that St Martin’s Press publish “My Way: An Autobiography”, which
Paul co-wrote with David Dalton.
