Ellis the Widowmaker

Feb 2013 Ellis the Widowmaker

CD: Widowmaker  – Widowmaker Angel Air

The 70s hard rock group Widowmaker saw Love Affair’s singer Steve Ellis fronting a somewhat “heavier” outfit than the one with which he’d enjoyed such success in the late 60s.

Most recently having led his own band, the imaginatively titled Ellis, he emerged in the delightfully named Widowmaker with former Spooky Tooth and Mott the Hoople guitarist Ariel Bender (Luther Grosvenor), ex-Hawkwind guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton, bassist Bob Daisley (late of Chicken Shack), and drummer Paul Nicholls from Lindisfarne.

Their 1976 debut album, released on the Jet Records label, comprised a series of strong original compositions – a varied collection of songs both fast and slow in approach, with Zoot Money bringing keyboards to one track.

This new edition of the LP is augmented by some bonus recordings – Bob Harris introducing three non-album performances which testify to Widowmaker’s prowess in a concert setting.
