Music and fun of Vanity Fare
West Coast – Vanity Fare
Thumbs Up Records
This is a summer sound evoking the golden rays and golden era of American Music. West Coast – where Vanity Fare to this day maintain cult status.
Vanity Fare are a great British harmony group whose international hits Hitchin’ a Ride and Early in the Morning both sold miore than a million copies each, worldwide, and earned them two Gold Discs, selling a million in California alonem, and still holding cult status on America’s West Coast. In those days, they were labelled ‘the British Beach Boys’, actually touring Europe with them in 69.
After 45 years in show business as master entertainers, interpreters of songs, and backing band of choice to the greats, three of those greats have persuaded Vanity Fare to – at last – release the album they would want to.
Vanity Fare’s first album predominantly features their own music, and also features Chris Farlowe, Peter Sarsteadt and Ray Phillips.
It all started in England in 1968 ,when their debut single I Live for the Sun climbed to No.20 in the British charts, reaching number 5 in the Australian Top Ten, and stayed there for nine weeks – and hit No.5 in the Australian Top 10.
with their fourth and fifth singles, the band made the uinternational breakthrough, and Hitchin’ a ride became a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic reaching No.5 in the US, earning them their second gold record and staying in the UK and American charts for nearly four months.
If followed the success of Early in the Morning which, six months before, had reached the Top Ten in the UK and the US, and earned them their first gold disc.
Their success in America was heightened when Hitchin’ A Ride was adopted as a cult song by many of the West Coast DJs and helped create the “Hitch-Hike” dance craze.
Some of the early highlights of their career include television appearances, in the US, with Mama Cass, and supporting The Beach Boys on their 1969 world tour.
The band tours extensively in many countries, including the US, Australia, Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East. They have also appeared on more than 100 TV shows including “Top of the Pops” and ‘‘Beat Club”, and performed at many prestigious venues including the Paris Olympia, and the Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium,
Dominion Theatre London, Wembley Conference Centre, Sydney Showground, and as the star cabaret aboard the cruise ship QE2.
They recently appeared on the “Oh Boy; It’s The Non-Stop Sixties Show”, a nationwide tour on which Vanity Fare backed some of the biggest names on the 60s circuit including, Chris Fariowe, Mike Pender, Brian Poole, Mike D’Abo, PJ Proby, Dave Berry.
In 2010, the band completed a 56-date UK tour with the 25th Anniversary of “The Solid Silver Sixties Show”. In 2011-12, Vanity Fare were touring once again with the 26th & the 27th Solid Silver Sixties Show.
The bands current stage show reflects much of their 45-year history and features their own hits from the 60s & 70s, plus a varied selection of the best pop music from the past 50 years. Vanity Fare began in the late sixties and can still boast having three members who have been working together for more than four decades!
West Coast is an album of gems born out of a shared love of great Pop Music and the confidence of a life-time playing together, from one of Britain’s unsung national treasures.
