Feb 2014 Stars mourn Phil Everly

Paul McCartney: “Phil Everly was one of my great heroes. With his brother Don, they were one of the major influences on The Beatles. When John and I first started to write songs, I was Phil and he was Don. Years later when I finally met Phil, I was completely star-struck and at the same time extremely im- pressed by his humility and gentleness of soul. I will always love him for giving me some of the sweetest musical memories of my life.”

Brian Wilson: “The Everly Brothers’ music was a huge inspiration for me growing up. As brothers, those harmonies just sound so sweet and tender, I think it’s a family thing. I could never get enough of their voices.”

Duane Eddy: “It was the most beautiful sound you’ll ever hear I think of two voices. They were like two great singers that came together who happened to be brothers and had that same sibling quality. It just made for a beautiful sound.”

Cliff Richard: “I think it would be true to say the Everly Brothers are the reason why myself, The Shadows and even The Beatles used harmonies on our records.  I learned it all from them.”

Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon: “Every close harmony duo recognises the immense debt they owe to the Everly Brothers. The Everlys were the very best and we all know it. When Gordon and I first got to meet Don and Phil it was act of homage. We had been singing their songs and copying their harmonies from the day we got together. No two voices can ever vie with the Everly Brothers as a duo and no high harmony singer will ever compare to Phil. He was the best.”

Brian May: “I feel like a huge piece of my youth just melted away. I loved, loved those guys, and still do. From the Everly Brothers I learned to play rhythm guitar – a lot of people don’t have that experience these days – and I learned every note of both parts they sang. They will always be my heroes. RIP Phil Everly – you were magic.”

Paul Simon:

“Phil and Don were the most beautiful sounding duo I ever heard. The Everlys were there at the crossroads of country and R’n’B. They witnessed and were part of the birth of rock and roll.”

Nancy Sinatra: “Touring with Phil and Don was one of the thrills of my life.”

Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers: “Every singer that has ever sang  two-part or three-part harmony knows that Phil Everly was the best in the world. He was a big hero of mine and a great friend.”

Billy J Kramer: “I had the good fortune to have toured with the Everly Brothers.
