Feb 2014 Tour goes in search of a soul singer

By Ralph Gowling

Former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards, Candi Staton, Percy Sledge, and former Three Degrees lead singer Sheila Ferguson are among 10 Motown and soul stars appearing on a musical extravaganza- type tour of the UK this month.

The tour, presented by television star and leading producer David Gest, features artists who have collectively sold more than 100 million records.

The dazzling bill for “David Gest’s Legends Of Soul Live Concert!” is: * The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards, the Grammy- winning Temptations lead singer whose vocals are featured on classic recordings like

‘Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone’, ‘I Can’t Get Next To You’, ‘Ball Of Confusion’, ‘Psychedelic Shack’ and ‘Cloud 9′

* Candi Staton (‘You Got The Love’, ‘Young Hearts Run Free’, ‘Nights On Broadway’, ‘In The Ghetto’) * Percy Sledge (‘When A Man Loves A Woman’, ‘Dark End Of The Street’)

* Sheila Ferguson, former lead singer of The Three Degrees (‘When Will I See You Again’, ‘Woman In Love’, ‘The Runner’, ‘Year Of Decision’, ‘Take Good Care Of Yourself’)

* Jody Watley, original female vocalist of Shalamar (‘Looking For A New Love’, ‘Friends’, ‘Real Love’, ‘The Second Time Around’, ‘A Night To Remember’)

* Gwen Dickey, original lead singer of Rose Royce (‘Car Wash’, ‘Wishing On A Star’, ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’)

* CeCe Peniston (‘Finally’, ‘Keep On Walkin’’, ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’, ‘I’m In The Mood’)

* Stax Records icon Eddie Floyd (‘Knock On Wood’, ‘Things Get Better’, ‘Raise Your Hand’)

* Philadelphia great Eddie Holman (‘Hey There Lonely Girl’, ‘I Love You’) * Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame star Little Anthony (‘Goin’ Out Of My Head’, ‘Tears On My Pillow’, ‘Better Use Your Head’, ‘Hurt So Bad’)

“I am thoroughly excited about my most extensive tour of the UK and having 10 true soul giants on stage, including the only living lead singer of The Temptations, Dennis Edwards,” said David Gest. “Dennis was responsible for ushering in the Norman Whitfield sound for Motown and brought the group their first Grammy Award for ‘Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone’, on which Dennis sang lead vocals.

“He sang lead on many of The Temptations’ greatest tunes and had a huge solo hit with ‘Don’t Look Any Further’, which he will also perform with his Temptations Review.

“All the other artists on the bill are the original singers of their classic hits and the fans will not be getting groups who have no original lead singer left. They are getting the real thing and this will be an amazing show with a nine-piece band of some of the top musicians in the world.”

David teams up with Candi Staton in a bid to hunt for a British talent who will be signed to record a new single with the renowned singer. The record will be produced by David himself.

“David will be bringing up members of the audience who will have a chance to sing with me on ‘You Got The Love’ and show off their vocal talents,” said Candi.

“But this is no standard singalong- with-Candi moment – it’s the real deal. One lucky singer will be signed to record a new single with me that a top contemporary writer has agreed to pen.

“Britain is like my second home and I have always been amazed at the untapped soul talent the UK has to offer. I want to find an extraordinary vocalist who the world can become familiar with and start someone on a new career in the music business.

“I have a feeling it will be a hard choice to select just one!”
